Magnificent Ansonia Classical Muses Bronze Finish Mantle Clock, circa 1882

Item Details

Magnificent c. 1882 Ansonia Muses figural clock, an exceptional piece. The clock features a pair of Classical muses, a harp-playing lady musician in a contemplative pose with bowed head and right hand upon the top of her harp, and a literary female muse to the right, with her left hand upon an opened book and her right hand held to her face. Both figures are sculpted with refinement and artistic expertise, with beautiful features and sinuously flowing gowns. The clock is featured to the center, with a white porcelain face, Roman numerals, and ornate openwork brass hands, and is mounted upon a classical plinth with embossed panel featuring a pair of birds upon a nest of eggs to the front, and musical-themed panels to each side. The clock is accented to each side with wondrous Classical female visages, each detailed with a heavy foliate-encrusted ring. The top is crowned with an ornate urn, which is decorated with leaves and pinecones, and accented by ornate openwork handles, from the clock’s two keys are hung. The clock features and pair of muses are mounted upon an ebonized metal base with ornate bronze metal feet and garland and swag bronzed spelter center medallion. The clock has a polished brass pendulum and two keys. Marked ‘Ansonia Clock Co., New York, USA, Pat. June 14, 1881’ and ‘June 18, 1882’. Artist-signed to the base of the literary muse.
