English Tole Painted Tray

Item Details

A small English red tole painted tray, having stenciled fruit and shell border, over a gilt ground. The cultural phenomenon of toleware is synonymous with European interest in the Orient whereupon Japanese arts became enormously influential. Toleware was the British layperson’s imitation of Japanese Lacquerware. Toleware is both a handsome cultural art and a remnant of Orientalism. Circa 1880.
