Item Details

An original watercolor titled Hillside with Buildings #1by well listed Cincinnati artist John Hauser (1859-1913). Hauser was the son of German immigrants. He grew up in the Over-The-Rhine area of Cincinnati and studied at the McMicken Art School, under the tutelage of Thomas Noble and later in Munich at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He returned to Cincinnati in 1883 but continued to spend a considerable amount of time traveling in Europe with fellow Cincinnati artist Henry Sharp. In 1890, Hauser was one of the first members of the Cincinnati Art Club and in 1891 made his first trip out West, which began his life-long passion for portraying Native Americans. He and his wife spent months at a time living with the Sioux tribe, were eventually adopted by the nation and John was given the name “Straight White Shield”. This painting depicts the hillside of Mt. Adams, Cincinnati, Ohio. It comes from a retrospective exhibition at the Cincinnati Art Galleries, LLC in Feburary 2012. The painting is signed to the lower right. It was bought from Closson Galleries with two gallery labels to the reverse. The painting is professionally presented behind Museum Glass in a gilt frame with white linen matting; ready to hang.
