1802 Map of North America
Item Details
A framed 1802 map of North America, by William Darton Jr., for Atlas to Walker’s Geography, published in London by Vernor & Hood. It depicts the continent only one year before the United States bought the Louisiana Purchase, and two years before the Lewis and Clark expedition, i.e. just before the American frontier expanded west of the Mississippi. The coastlines are hand-colored. The map is matted in paper patterned to look like canvas, and framed under glass in a wood frame with a gold tone finish.
Condition
- minor paper discoloration and vertical creases to the map (it was taken from a book), but overall good for its age.

14.75" W x 13.75" H x 1.0" D
- dimensions of the frame. The map itself is about 8.5" wide by 7.25" tall.
