Durand (American (1796-1886) was a master landscape painter of his time, and part of the ‘Hudson River’ style of landscape painting. He was also known for his engraving skills, having been taught the art as a young child by his father. He engraved John Trumbull’s Declaration of Independence and gained his reputation as a master engraver as well. He did not begin painting until he was in his forties, and went on to the New York Drawing Association in 1825, which would become the National Academy of Design. He retained the post of president of the organization from 1845 to 1861. This lovely landscape shows a young couple taking a leisurely stroll through a park, lit beautifully in the morning sunlight. Hey are surrounded by full, leafy trees on their path and seem dwarfed by the atmospheric landscape. The image is tagged to the reverse and presented in a gold-toned frame. Ready to hang.
