1837 Springfield Single Shot Muzzle Loading Musket
Item Details
An antique Model 1816 Type III Spring Field muzzleloader musket manufactured in 1837. This antique Springfield is marked on the plate behind the hammer, ‘Spring Field 1837’ and in front of the hammer there is an eagle with ‘U.S.’ underneath. It was one of 325,000 muskets that was manufactured at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts between the years 1816 and 1840. The barrel is 43’ with a 69 caliber smooth bore. This musket was originally a flintlock, but has been converted (probably in the 1850’s) to a percussion cap. Many of these muskets were converted because a percussion cap was more reliable and weather resistant than a flintlock mechanism. A well trained soldier could fire this musket 2-3 times a minute. The gun is comprised of a wood and mixed metal frame and features a metal butt plate, lock, trigger, two barrel bands (sling swivel attached to one), stock, barrel, bayonet lug (missing bayonet) and the original button style ramrod. The left shoulder has initials, ‘BWT’, lock strap is marked, ‘S’, and an inspector mark, ‘H’ by the trigger guard.
