1929 Ford Model A Roadster Convertible Coupe

Item Details

A 1929 Ford Model A Roadster Convertible Coupe. First manufactured by the Ford Motor Company in late 1927, Ford used this model as an answer to competitive vehicles being produced. To introduce the Model A lines, Ford shut its plants down for six months to retool the assembly and manufacturing plants in order to prepare for the Model A. This proved to be a lucrative and sound decision; the Model A lines became such a popular model for Ford that by early 1929, more than one million Model A Roadster vehicles had been sold to consumers for $385 each, with new features like an electric starter, safety glass windshield and the new, blue Ford Company logo marker on the radiator cover. A cast iron plate could be optionally purchased to channel heat from the engine to the cab. Production ceased on all lines of the Model A in March, 1932.

This Roadster Convertible Coupe appears to be in near original condition and it runs and drives, with one original key. It has a water-cooled L-head, inline 4-cylinder engine that provides a whopping forty horsepower and a top cruising speed of sixty-five miles per hour. It has a three-speed sliding gear manual unsynchronised transmission with single speed reverse. It has a newer canvas top installed but no side windows. The safety glass windshield is held in place by a steel frame and has a single, steel crank to operate a small, exterior windshield wiper. The doors have ‘t’-shaped handles and are functional. The gas and brake pedals are elongated, horizontally-shaped and depress properly. The steering wheel is black metal with the horn knob in the center. The clutch knob is original. The instrument panel is applied silver-toned steel with a key-operated off/on switch, visual fuel gauge, a twist-cap lamp, ampere meter, odometer, and trip odometer with reset switch. The interior wall panels and floorboards appear to be original. The seat and seat back have been replaced with black and brown faux leather. The convertible top operates by fitting the pull-up top into a finial on either side of the windshield and snapping the canvas to the windshield frame. The top has a glass panel rear window; the ‘optional’ rearview mirror is mounted in the center of the windshield. The engine covers are held in place with spring hooks and have handles to lift the covers. The gas cap is located in the cowl between the engine compartment and the windshield frame, and the fuel system is gravity fed to the carburetor. The radiator cover is silver-toned steel and has a finial topped radiator cap with a visual ‘center line’ gauge. The bumpers are openwork steel on both front and back; the license plate affixes to the center rod between the two ample, large headlamps. The rubber-covered running boards are in good condition. The tires are white-walls, Firestone ‘4.40/4°.50-21 Gum-Dipped’ and appear to be new. There is a spare tire affixed to a frame outside the trunk in the rear. The ample trunk is original material and included in it are a grey vinyl car cover, ‘Tow Recovery’ strap kit and a large toolbox with bungee cords inside.

Condition

- to fair. The paint is old, if not original, and has minor scratches, nicks, dents, scrapes, and surface rust. This car did have an optional heater installed at some point but it is now missing. There is a heater tube that runs inside the cab but it’s missing the exhaust attachment. The exhaust system is newer but is of poor quality; it doesn’t seal well around the exhaust manifold, which allows exhaust fumes to enter the cab directly. The seat and door panels have been reupholstered. The gauges work and the ignition switch is newer. The trunk floor is original and solid. The steering wheel has several cracks and electrical tape in spots. When driving the car, the front end feels loose and something is rubbing when making tight turns, indicating that the front suspension will need work in the near future. Fuel Stabilizer has been added to the fuel. The engine has had a fresh oil change with new coolant, coolant flange gasket, and hoses. The engine does have a few oil leaks; this is very common for the Model A. The wiring harness going to the horn and the headlights appears to be new and works, but the horn does not emit a standard sound; it makes a grinding noise. The carburetor has been rebuilt and the gas tank has been drained and refilled with fresh gas. The inside of the gas tank shows minor rust spots but is in good shape. The fuel filter was inspected and very little debris was found inside. The clutch and transmission work as they should and the brakes operate well.
