Petion Savain Original Oil On Canvas
Item Details
An original oil on canvas by listed Haitian artist Petion Savain (1906-1973/75). Petion Savain is considered the father of Haitian painting, being the first Haitian painter to be taken seriously when he won medals at the Gallery of Science and Art in 1939, five years before the opening of the Centre d’Art. He studied mural, fresco and tempura techniques, as well as wood cut engraving at the Art Students’ League in New York during the early 1940s. He was an acclaimed artist by the 1944 art revival. Savain was an accomplished painter, lawyer, writer, and teacher of the arts in his lifetime. His works have been widely exhibited in the United States. Savain’s works have a very bold personal style that has been copied by many other Haitian artists. His works tend to have a recognizable use of pinks and purples, along with other bright colors. He sometimes uses semicircles and triangles in which painted figures crouch or sit. The Haitian marketplace provides the subject for most of Savain’s works. In this piece six Haitian women are pictured selling goods at the marketplace. The piece is presented in a simple wooden frame beneath a linen mat. The painting is signed ‘Savain Haiti’ to the lower right corner. Savain’s works do not come up at auction very often, and prices for his pieces continue to rise. Here is your chance to own a wonderful painting by one of Haiti’s most beloved and respected artists.
