A marine sponge specimen (Euplectella aspergillum), is commonly known as a Venus’ flower basket. A male and a female shrimp begin their lives in the sponge, eventually breeding. When the offspring are tiny they escape to find their own Venus’ flower basket. The adult shrimp are too large to escape and remain until death. In traditional Asian cultures it was given as a wedding gift. In Japan an Euplectella aspergillum symbolizes ‘till death us do part’. Includes the gold tone metal stand.
