Early 19th Century French Cavalry Saber
Item Details
A French light cavalry saber, dating from circa the early 19th century. It has a slightly curved steel blade with a tapered point, and a brass hilt with an ornate openwork floral hand-guard, and a leather-wrapped grip. The thick edge of the blade (opposite the cutting edge) is marked ‘Dirr. a Andlau pres Klingenthal’ in etched letters, meaning that the sword is from Andlau near Klingenthal, an important center of weapons manufacture near the German border (hence the German place name ‘Klingenthal’, or ‘Valley of Swords’). It dates to before 1838, when weapons manufacturing for the French government in the region ended and was shifted to Châtellerault.
