19th Century Cast Iron Dolphin Downspout
Item Details
A 19th century cast iron downspout, in the form of an Egyptian style column with cast dolphin and marked ‘Ellicotts Elk Ridge’, circa 1840. Elk Ridge Landing, along the Patapsco river, near Baltimore, Maryland, was an important transfer point for goods and became the largest colonial seaport north of Annapolis, MD. The Quaker Ellicotts made significant contributions to the area and era, building bridges, roads and a wharf. They constructed the beginnings of the National Highway, America’s first interstate. In 1830, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad laid their first thirteen miles of track, which connected this community to Baltimore. America’s first railroad terminal was built there in 1831.
