1861 P53 Enfield Cavalry Rifle

Item Details

An 1861 P53 Enfield cavalry rifle produced by the London Armoury Company Ltd. of London. During the Civil War, both the Union and Confederate armies imported the highly desirable Enfield rifles, but were heavily favored by the Confederacy. These were used during famous battles such as the Battle of Shiloh (April 1862) and the Siege of Vicksburg (May 1863). The rifle is comprised of a thick mahogany wood body with a mixed metal barrel and percussion lock and brass sand casted trigger guard and butt plate. There is a mark on the barrel band as well. The ramrod is intact, stored underneath the barrel, as well as the swing swivels. The rifle is marked to the lock plated ‘L.A. Co. 1861’ and with a British Government manufacturers royal crown and ‘V.A.’ for Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria). The gun has had some modifications over time, including the shortening of its original length, a rear sight replacement, shortening of the ramrod and refinish to the wood.
