Boxed Set of Miniature Kabuki Theatre Masks

A vintage, boxed set of miniature Kabuki theatre ‘Noh’ character masks, with figurine. Kabuki typically offers history plays, or ‘jidaimono,’ which are generally of the shogunate class, or domestic plays of townspeople, or ‘sewamono.’ Fitted in separate compartments within a small wooden box are eleven miniature Noh masks of characters in Japanese Kabuki theatre and a small female figure. The masks were and are used to depict demons and relatives to tell a story. Each is hand painted and has a tiny elastic band attached to either side of the mask so it can fit over the head of the included figure. The figure is female, clad in a traditional kimono of orange, gold, teal, purple, and green floral fabric. She has short black hair and bright red lips.
Condition
- to fair. One of the Noh masks is missing; the figure’s hair is falling out due to the age of the figure, but most is still intact. wear is consistent with age. The box shows wear typical of age, and the top is split, but still gives a tight fit to the base.
