Original Caroline Lord Oil on Canvas
Item Details
An original oil on canvas, ‘Portrait of a Girl,’ is attributed to Caroline Lord (American, 1860-1927), a renowned Cincinnati artist who taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy for nearly forty years. She was a member of the Women’s Artist’s Club of Cincinnati and her work was exhibited in the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Chicago Exhibition, the Paris Salon, in New York, and in the Society of Western Artists exhibition. The painting shows a beautiful young girl in a white, silky tulle dress, focused intently on a distant scene. Her auburn hair is mussed and she is flushed, arms crossed on her lap. The delicate brush strokes and impressionistic style gives the painting an air of expectancy. It is housed in a gold painted wooden frame, ornate with fabric-like detail. The artist’s signature is not seen on the visible canvas; the words, ‘July 88(?)’ appear in the lower left corner. On the back of the painting is a pocket containing four paper documents: a photocopy of a newspaper article discussing Caroline Lord and the Cincinnati Women’s Art Club; a photocopy of a ‘Letter of Authority’ from the Probate Court of Franklin County, Ohio, confirming Joseph Keith Lord as executor of the estate of Josephine Bye Lord; a photocopy of a letter from Richard J. Boyle (Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio 1965 – 1973) to Mrs. Theodore G. Keller with a copy to Samuel Aronoff; and a photocopy of an unsigned letter to Mr. Sam L. Aronoff discussing the appraisal of some unnamed Caroline Lord paintings.
