Antique "The Progress of Love" Painting Tapestry
Item Details
An antique ‘The Progress of Love’ painting tapestry. It features a beautiful tapestry that combines two 18th century paintings by the French artist Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) into a single scene. The right side of the tapestry depicts The Meeting, a painting in which aristocratic youths have a secret rendezvous in a lush garden. The left side depicts The Lover Crowned, a follow up painting in which our young lovers pose in the same garden while an acquaintance draws their picture. Both paintings were part of Fragonard’s “The Progress of Love” series (1771-73) commissioned by the mistress of King Louis XV. The tapestry is housed in a molded wood frame with brass-toned paint. Metal tags on the bottom of the frame list the artist’s name, his lifespan, and the title of the work.
