Karl Griesbaum Singing Bird Automaton
Item Details
A circa early 20th century Karl Griesbaum singing bird automaton box. The brass box has an ornate design featuring lovely floral, star and scroll work in relief throughout the box. By winding the box with the key and sliding the bar at the front to the right, the oval lid opens to reveal a tiny bird that pops up and sings. The little bird is fully feathered, (they were usually created by taxidermist) and moves back and forth and the wings flap as it sings. The little box is absolutely a technical marvel, the sound is so realistic it is hard to believe it isn’t actually the bird singing. Made in Germany. The singing box is in working condition.
Condition
- very little wear. In working condition. The front switch does work to stop the movement. Sometimes the lid does not shut and it needs to be wound again for it to close.
