A large, illustrated Roman Catholic antique family Bible. The Bible has a decorative cover which consists of thick leather covered boards embossed and with sophisticated artwork and a large cross. Per the main title page : ‘The Holy Bible, translated from the Latin Vulgate, diligently compared with the Hebrew, Greek, and Other Editions in divers languages. The Old Testament, first published by the English college at Douay, A.D. 1609. The New testament, first published by the English college at Rheims, A.D. 1582, with Notes, Critical, Historical and Explanatory, selected from the most eminent commentators and critics by the Rev. George Haydock, revised and corrected under the superintendence of the Very Rev. Frederick Canon Oakeley, M.A., with the approbation of his eminence the cardinal archbishop of Westminster and imprimatur John Card. M’Closkey, archbishop of New York.’ The text of this Bible is the so called Douay-Rheims Bible, which is an English translation from the Latin Vulgate. Included in this large Bible is the complete Old and New Testament. Inside, one will also find an extensive introduction to the Bible, many full page engravings, and family pages to reflect marriages, births and deaths. Published: 1884, Publisher: P.F. Condition
The cover page is no longer bound but is still loosely included inside. Moderate toning and foxing throughout the Bible, consisitent with age. Some wear to the cover and binding.
