Vintage Kimball Crank Phonograph
Item Details
A vintage crank phonograph by the W.W. Kimball Company of Chicago. Around the 1910-1920, “talking machines” enjoyed enormous popularity. As the patents held by major distributors expired, furniture manufacturers and independent companies began producing record players to meet the public’s demand. This crank wind record player sits in a wooden cabinet supported on four Queen Anne-style cabriole legs. The top of the walnut cabinet is hinged, opening to reveal the turntable. Inside the lid, a gold-tone Kimball decal and a series of patent dates, the most recent is October 7, 1919. The front of the cabinet features two small doors on either side of the speaker. The speaker compartment has a removable door with a pierced fretwork panel. The speaker compartment is stamped ‘50725’. Also included are six Kimball phonograph albums with an assortment of records, primarily from Pathé Fréres Phonograph Company. In working condition. The records are untested.
Condition
The record player was in working condition when tested. The finish is scratched. There are flecks of white paint along the back edge.
