A cast bronze 1965 sculpture by Milton Hebald of David and Goliath. Recently deceased American Artist Milton Hebald (1917-2015) has 23 public works of art around Manhatten includoing two in Central Park and one at JFK airport. Mr. Hebald was born in 1917 in Manhattan and studied at the Arts Students League, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and the National Academy of Design, and taught at the Cooper Union and the Brooklyn Museum of Art before winning the 1955 Rome Prize fellowship from the American Academy in Rome, where he lived for 50 years before returning to New York. Two of his pieces are in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. This sculpture is of cast bronze of David in final combat with Goliath. Styled in fluid lines with out refined details depicting Goliath on his rump, legs flexed and bent outward. His back is curved with the left shoulder down while the left arm follows the curve of his back. The rugged head is turned to the left revealing stone embedded in the right forehead. The right arm, bearing a shield, is raised protectingly to the right side of his head. David as a lithe, nude figure has his left foot planted on giant’s chest, ready to thrust him down. Both arms are raised over his head, the left bearing a sling. This sculpture was commissioned in limited numbers by the Jewish Reform Appeal as presentation pieces. Executed by Milton Hebald 1968-1969 and his signature can be found on the back of the shield.
Condition
-wood base has some minor blemishes, sculpture shifts freely on base and may need tightened, piece needs dusted as there is soil in the crevices.
