An original oil on board portrait by listed artist Herbert Ross (Louisville, KY 1895 – 1989) of an African American man with beard, in a red shirt. Signed upper left and dated 1977. Herbert Ross was born to a prominent family in Pewee Valley, Kentucky in 1895 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York before moving to Paris in 1922 to study portrait painting. In 1930, he exhibited two paintings at the Paris Salon at the Grande Palais de Champs-Elysees in 1930. Ross eventually moved back to Pewee Valley Kentucky, just outside of Louisville. His work is considered rare. Provenance: The current owner was acquainted with Ross and acquired this piece from him personally.

Small abrasions and scuffs to the paint and spotting on back.
