An antique McKenney & Hall hand colored lithograph titled Ong-Pa-Ton-Ga, The Big Elk Chief of the Omahas, drawn, printed, and colored at Lehman & Dural Lithographic Establishment, entered according to act of Congress in the year 1836. This is page number 135 of the book History of the Indian tribes of North America, with biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs. Presented behind tan mat, under non-glare glass, in a black beveled wood frame with gilt trim to the interior.
History of the Indian Tribes of North America is a collection of 125 images of lithographic and chromolithographic plates. Thomas Loraine McKenney (1785 – 1859) served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1824 to 1830, and had portraits of Native American Chiefs commissioned for his Gallery in the War Department. He was intent on publishing and recording the history of vanishing North American Indians. James Hall (1793 – 1868) provided text for Native History of the Indian Tribes of North America, published in three volumes between 1838 and 1844.
