Jiri Kolar Original Collage

An original collage, signed and dated to the bottom right hand corner by the listed Czech artist Jiri Kolar (1914-2002), dated 1962, titled ‘Green Music.’ The artist has utilized the art of music, sheet music that is, to create a work of visual art. Interestingly, the artist has hijacked a subject that’s rather mundane to the non instrumentally inclined person, and transformed it into a very compositionally interesting piece of collage art. The sheet music is printed, likely by hand, in white and green, and has been variously juxtaposed against itself, to create an evocative study in linear aesthetics. The collage is floated on a single white mat, and is presented in a lovely wooden frame with dark stain. The piece was purchased directly from the artist, by Irving Lester Janis (1918-1990), world-famous research psychologist at Yale and Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, developer of the theory of ‘groupthink.’
