Rembrandt Etching "Portrait of Jan Uytenbogaert"
Item Details
An authentic Rembrandt van Rijn etching of a seated gentleman titled Portrait of Jan Uytenbogaert, Preacher of the Remonstrants. Etching and burin on an octagonal plate, trimmed just outside the plate mark, laid paper, signed upper left and dated upper right in plate and inscribed with a Latin quatrain by Hugo Grotius at bottom. A fine, rich impression in very good condition. This is the last state worked on by Rembrandt himself, with burr in the left eye of the subject and in the curtains at right. Print is matted with acid-free matting and mounted in lovely frame. Update: authentic and as stated, has been removed from frame and un-matted for photography and verification, Biörklund’s fifth state (of 6); Usticke’s third state (of 6); White and Boon’s fifth state (of 6). Of great historical importance, this was the first work in the form of an etching commissioned of Rembrandt.
