Item Details

A very fine quality 18th century Swedish silver presentation tankard, having a noble history, the piece presented to a Miss Colby, by the tenants of the Welsh Ffynone estate. Miss Colby, one of the historic heiresses of the manor house, was presented this very large tankard, on the occasion of her marriage. The piece is designed in the Baroque manner, with a single figural putto seated on a fringed pillow, as the fop, atop the lid, which is hand chased with Neo-classical masks. The body is adorned with a glorious fairy tale scene with Minotaurs and nude as well as draped figures. The bottom is numbered ‘4572 60.16 R/’ with four unascribed hallmarks, as well as with the Swedish state and purity ‘S.’ Engraved to foot, ‘Presented to Miss Colby by the tenants of the Ffynone Home Estate on the occasion of her marriage June 16th’. The Ffynone mansion still exists in the Manordeifi parish, Wales. It was erected in 1793 by Colonel John Colby and remained in the Colby family until 1919. The piece predates the institution of Swedish silver dating system, which was begun in 1759. Weighs approximately 60.52 troy ounces.
