Item Details

An iron alloy head of an oba (king) sculpted by an Edo artist. The style of the king is of the Benin kingdom court of Nigeria. The artist’s emphasis on the collar, crown and facial features illustrate the importance of a king’s status, his regal nature and the spiritual meaning of the head. This type of piece would have been displayed on an altar and does not represent a particular person.
