Circa 1880 Lemon Peel Leather Baseball, Totally Intact
Item Details
A circa 1800’s lemon peel leather baseball, entirely intact. The leather ball was constructed from one piece of leather and has leather lacing at four seams that meet in the middle. The ball appears to be all original with no repairs or loose stitching. This is the type of base ball that is on display in the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, it is a bit smaller than a modern day baseball but the leather is still soft and supple. Interestingly, Cincinnati is of course home to the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first openly all-professional team, with ten salaried players. The crude bat from this collection is also included with the baseball. The bat was most likely made from a railroad brake handle and used by children due to it’s smaller size. Neither the ball or the bat bear any markings.
Condition
The ball is in remarkable condition considering it’s age. The bat is in good condition with a slight water stain.
Dimensions
The baseball is roughly 7.5" at the circumference, the bat is 22.5" long and about 1.75" wide.
