Antique Sugar Chest

Item Details

A figured maple sugar chest, of the type particularly popular in southern U.S. around the 19th century. Locking sugar chests protected a family’s valuable supply of sugar; the possession of sugar indicating wealth and status. This chest is supported on four tapered legs. It has a hinged lid and tongue and groove joints. The bottom drawer of the chest has a brass tone pull and is constructed with lap joints. The piece has a dark varnish finish.

Condition

Locking mechanism is not in working condition; finish is damaged and some seams are separating.
