Battle of Midway Sole Survivor print by Jim Griffiths
Item Details
This Aviation art print depicts sole survivor of the Torpedo Squadron 8, George G. Gay, during the Battle of Midway. During the battle, Gay was the first of his squadron to launch a torpedo attack on the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga without any fighter plane support. His plane was eventually brought down by five AGM Zeros. Floating in the ocean, he hid under his seat cushion to avoid Japanese strafing attacks. Of the squadrons thirty pilots and radiomen, Gay was the only survivor. He was featured in the August 31, 1942 issue of Life Magazine. While in the ocean, he witnessed the destruction of the three Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga and Soryu. He lived to become a pilot for Trans-World Airlines, author the book ‘Sole Survivor’ and lecture on his Midway experiences. The print is matted and professionally framed in blue metal frame.
This print is inscribed, pencil signed and dated 1983.
