Ghanaian Modern Wood Carving

Item Details

A Ghanaian modernist wood sculpture depicting an Ewe drummer sitting and playing his Sogo drum. The Ewe tribe are known for their complex and mesmerizing drum rhythms, and their music is led by percussion unlike most other cultural styles which typically incorporate a melody with percussion as support. This sculpture style known as a ‘shadow’ figure is created out of a single piece of wood, species undetermined due to paint and wax finish, but it has a light body, and is very smooth to the touch.
