Signed 1882 Etching by William Strang "The Traveller"
Item Details
A signed etching by well listed and regarded Scottish painter and engraver William Strang (13 February 1859—12 April 1921) who was one of the original members of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers as well as a prolific illustrator, providing images for Rudyard Kippling and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In this particular etching titled ‘The Traveler’ a man sits with a cane between his knees, his hat and cloak disambiguate his serious face and slightly hunched body, making it difficult to tell the mans age or status, perhaps adding to the transient quality of the otherwise stoic portrait. The slat backed chair he sits upon can be partially seen by the viewer but the columnar structure of the rest of the etching fades away calling the viewers attention to the traveller’s dark face and mysterious stature. Piece is print signed and dated to the bottom right hand corner and pencil signed to the bottom left corner. It is presented in a white mat with gold toned beveled frame. Albert Roullier Gallery and print information is displayed to the verso.
