A Vintage Embroidered Blanket by The Marsh Arabs of Southern Iraq
Item Details
A simply spectacular vintage embroidered blanket by The Marsh Arabs of Ben Hassan Village in Southern Iraq. The blankets are hand woven using locally spun and dyed wool, they are done on ground looms in two sections then sewn together and embroidered by the maiden girls in preparation for their marriage. This blanket is embroidered in a way that is both primitive yet modernistic in design to depict stylized flowers, birds and a horse type animal in a vibrant palette of pink, blue, orange, turquoise and red. The blanket is indeed in two sections, sewn together with fringe at both ends.
Research indicates that these blankets were ‘discovered’ in the 1970’s but their production has declined due to a different trade structure in the villages. Also, the finest collection of embroidered blankets is said to have been assembled by Author Agatha Christie.
