Item Details

A fantastic relic from the Civil War, a dated 1864 tarred canvas knapsack with leather strapping. The knapsack’s canvas was lightly tarred to add in waterproofing. One leather strap is marked ‘Aug (?) 13, 1864, Wm. Butterfield, Recton (?), New York’, along with another word ending in ‘archard’. The aged lettering was chalked to aid in identification. The knapsack has an overlap satchel and brown leather shoulder straps, which have scalloped ends and stitched round leather buttons. The knapsack is displayed in a pine wood case.

Condition

good for age, exhibits leather wear and fatigue with cracking, some corrosion to fittings
