Antique R. Whiting Grandfather Clock
Item Details
An antique R. Whiting grandfather clock, circa 1810, Federal period. The early 19th century clock has a base that stands on simple cutout bracket feet that form a nicely shaped apron. The waist door allows easy access to the weights inside. The decorative bonnet features a broken swan neck pediment and fluted columns topped with brass finials. The arched bonnet door is fitted with glass and easily opens to access the painted wooden dial. The dial is painted on wood and signed “R. Whiting, Winchester” in a gold banner positioned across the center of the dial. The four spandrel areas and the arch are decorated with scrolled patterns and gilt gesso work that has been skillfully gilded. The time ring is displayed in Arabic numerals used to mark the hours and the five-minute markers. There is also a subsidiary seconds and calendar dial in their traditional locations. Movement was last serviced in 1997. Riley Whiting and two partners started a clock-making company in Winchester, Connecticut in 1807. Whiting mainly manufactured 30-hour wooden-movement and tall-case clocks until 1828. Clock is not currently working.
