Modern 'Floating' Office Desk by Milo Baughman with Chair
Item Details
A stylish Modernist office desk in hardwood. Two drawer units to either side are set slightly forward of the main writing surface, behind which a number of pigeon holes and letter slots are set, with diagonal front faces, giving the entire piece the impression of being slanted backwards. The writing surface is covered in a removable sheet of transparent plastic for extra protection. There is one deep drawer on the left partitioned with diagonal slots for files or papers, and two shallower drawers on the right. The drawers have silver tone metal handles. The piece sits on four legs which are cylindrical and taper toward the bottom, and are capped in brass-tone metal. The rest of the piece is hardwood with a warm finish. Designed by renowned modern furniture designer Milo Baughman for the Drexel company, circa 1960s. Also included is a chair in a complementary style and color. The seat is upholstered in tan vinyl over padding, and the curved back rail connects two side supports/legs with a unique shape: they slant forward from the legs to just below the back rail, then slant backward, with a corner in the front and a curve in the back. The back legs are square while the front are round and capped with metal.
Condition
- moderate superficial damage to the top surface above the pigeon holes (not the main writing surface which is under plastic), including white paint flecks, light water damage, and spots of discoloration to the finish. Minor nicks and scratches to other parts of the piece.
