Victorian Oak Hearth Chair with Low Relief Faced Roundel

A Victorian oak hearth chair with a low relief, faced roundel to the back depicting a portly hooded man with a jolly disposition. Carved in low relief, he wears a cloak and peers out as if in mid-chuckle. His face is highly detailed with even his two front teeth peeking out of his smiling mouth. This chair features a squat form with roundel back connected by splat with a decorative X in low relief and with arms curving down from back’s center, terminating in scrolling handholds. Arm supports curve in, connected to circular beveled seat. Chair sits atop short, turned legs, slightly splayed, terminating in ball feet with stretchers to all sides. This unique chair has nail and screw construction and has a dark finish that has been delightfully worn, giving it a pleasing antique patina.
Condition
- wear consistent with age. carved nose has worn down and finish is worn to some places. wood has begun to split to right arm and to where it has been joined in the seat and back. slight wobble.
