Etched and Colored Bronze Vase from India
Item Details
A bronze Indian vase dating from the era of British rule or some period before that. According to documentation, it was a gift to an opera singer from ‘the Maharajah of Alwa’ (Alwar), after a performance in the city of Lahore (exact date it was acquired is not given). In form, this vase is similar to a ‘chambu lota’ or Holy Water container of the Hindu faith. The vase has a spherical shape, with wide, squat body, a narrow neck with flared opening, and a foot that is about a half-inch tall. Decoration consists of circular etched lotus leaves and etched peacock medallions, along with lotus floral sprigs containing red flowers set against a light-colored background.

Vase is dented at side just above center band encircling circumference of body. This is in an area with light-colored pigment serving as background for floral decoration. At the indentation the light-colored paint has worn off (see photo). Lower band near base has discoloration (an area of light-colored pigment – see photo).
Dimensions
Top opening is 2" wide. Base is 3.5" in diameter.
