Item Details

A set of four beautifully framed and double-matted Vanity Fair English jockey prints. England’s Vanity Fair was published from 1868 to 1914. Unrelated to the later American publication by the same name, it was Europe’s most influential political and society magazine at the turn of the 20th century, due in no small part to its popular caricatures of royals, politicians, actors, and celebrity athletes both human and equine. This set includes: “A King’s Jockey” (1904), depicting Herbert ‘Diamond’ Jones who rose to fame after winning the Epsom Derby aboard King Edward VII’s Diamond Jubilee; “Danny” (1903), portraying Epsom Derby-winning jockey Daniel Maher who is both an American Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee and two-time Champion jockey in England; “J.E. Watts” (1903), in which John Evelyn Watts is shown as a 16-year-old rider in this 1903 Vanity Fair caricature, though he achieved his greatest success later as the trainer of 1927 Epsom Derby winner, Call Boy; “Frank Wootton” (1909), showing Francis ‘The Wonderboy’ Wootton who began riding professionally at age nine and became England’s youngest-ever Champion jockey in 1909 at age 16.
