Considered a leading American Precisionist, Edmund Lewandowski specialized in paintings and mosaic murals. He attended the Layton School of Art where he studied under Regionalist Garret Sinclair who had influence on his modern style and urban subjects before he focused on his Precisionist industrial paintings. After graduating, Lewandowski worked as a public school teacher and commercial artist. It was in 1936 when his work was brought to the attention of art dealer Edith Halpert who encouraged him to experiment with Precisionism and represented his work at her Downtown Gallery in New York City. In 1937, he met leading Precisionist Charles Sheeler who also impacted his work. Between 1936 and 1939, Lewandowski created work for the Federal Art Project, which also led to his inclusion in exhibitions held at several prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He continued to teach throughout his career, eventually returning to the Layton School of Art as their Director, which brought him to other schools as well. His work has been collected and exhibited at several additional institutions, such as the Milwaukee Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
