Provenance The Hoes family, Wayland MA by descent from President James Monroe.

There was tremendous grief after George Washington’s death, and works of art like this memorialized the first president, often depicting a mourning figure standing before a monument.

Below the Washington cameo, an India ink inscription reads [sic] ‘Born 11th Feb O.S. 1722 / Commander Continental Army 1775 / President Federal Convention 1787 / President United States 1789 / Declined Election 1796 / Commander Federal Army 1798’

Condition

- discoloration and toning are consistent with age; areas of loss are throughout, seen particularly in the sky.
