Provenance The Hoes family, Wayland MA by descent from President James Monroe.

There was tremendous grief after George Washington’s death, and works of art like this memorialized the first president, often depicting a mourning figure standing before a monument.

The memorial reads ‘Sacred to the Memory of Washington.’

- tear across the lower left; discoloration and fading consistent with age.
