Japanese photographer Daidō Moriyama is especially known for his portrayals of everyday postwar Japan and the emotional condition that resulted. He worked during a time of divided politics particularly surrounding the renewal of the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty in 1970. Moriyama studied photography under Takeji Iwamiya then worked as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe for three years beginning in 1961. Much of his work centers around themes of memory and urban mystery, mostly rendered in high contrast black and white images and tilted horizons. Throughout his career, Moriyama has received several awards such as the Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement from the International Center of Photography and the Hasselblad Award. He prefers to present his work as photo-books, allowing the viewer to navigate their own sequence of imagery. He has published more than 150 photo books since 1968. In addition, his work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Fondation Cartier pour l’art Contemporain, Paris; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography among others.
