Original Martin Rettig Oil on Board Painting
Item Details
An original oil on board painting by well listed Cincinnati artist, and student of Frank Duveneck, Martin Rettig (1869 – 1956). A white ceramic vase is bursting with purple African Daisies whose complexion appears in stark contrast against the white ground on which they’ve been painted. Especially exciting in this painting are a pair of marks, painted with gutsiness, that represent the light falling on the vase. Defined by their impasto, the marks fall singularly, well placed and functional, a perfect example of Rettig’s prowess. Before the vase lie more of the flowers languidly strewn about, they weight the bottom well. The painting is signed to the lower right and is presented in what would appear to be its original wooden frame with faded gold gilt.
Condition
- crackelique to surface, frame is significantly worn and was likely repainted at some point in time. Wood Panel also exhibits cracks, however they wouldn’t seem to pose any imminent threat.
