Item Details

Untitled, late 20th century
Oil on paper

Deborah Kriger has a BFA from the Maryland Institute of Art. Recently she has shown at a gallery in New York City, M55, for several years. Her work has also been represented in other New York City, Baltimore and French galleries. She taught Life Drawing, Drawing, Printmaking and Painting at Ethical Culture Fieldston School located in the Bronx, to middle and high school students for the past sixteen years. Kriger is now retired, but continues to paint in Delaware County.

Kriger’s paintings are primarily in oils executed from observation featuring landscapes and still lifes. She has a painterly approach with direct painting while incorporating techniques such as glazing and scumbling to add depth to her colors and surface. She is interested in depicting light and texture found in nature, especially in her still lifes.

Concerned with the preservation of the environment, Kriger’s work evidences an urgency in her approach to landscape painting. As she paints outdoors, she captures areas before they are impacted by the encroachment of homes or business expansions.
