Michael Salvatore Abbate, a lifelong resident of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, embarked on a creative journey that was deeply rooted in his surroundings and his passion for the arts. Michael pursued his artistic education at The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, RI. In 1948, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration from RISD and his early career saw him lending his artistic talents to various projects, including hand-painted billboard signs in an era before the advent of printed signage. He also skillfully adorned company trucks with lettering, notably for Nydam Oil, and his mastery of calligraphy extended to creating diplomas for Uxbridge High School, marking significant milestones for countless graduates. Amidst these artistic endeavors, Michael’s talent caught the attention of the Worcester Art Museum, an acknowledgment of his exceptional skills. While the details may be shrouded in the mists of time, it is believed that one or two of his paintings were selected for display and awarded by this esteemed institution. Beyond these accomplishments, Michael embarked on a fulfilling career as an art teacher in the Worcester School Department, leaving an indelible impact on generations of aspiring artists.
