‘14th Reg, Co. E. Camp at Fort Albany, Oct 1, 1861.
Dear friend i now have a chance to write to you and to let you know that i am well and hope that you are same. i could not have a chance to write to you before i have been so bisey that i could not. i hade a good time comeming out hear but it is not a very plesant time now but i like it. we have kind oficers and we have crow oficers. we have wise men and we have dam fools we have good cookes and we have bad cookes. it is not like beanning in the old shop but that don’t make it plesent. they talk about the suney south but it is colder out hear in the mornings and night and hot in the day. We are … now instead of infantry. We dril on the big guns. We are place three miles from Washington on … Hights in Fort Albany. We have not had eney fighting yet and I don’t think we shal. I am most tider of waiting for them. I want to get one or two shots at them and I bet that old calib will make them jump so high that they will sea the third heaven. George, I should like to have you out hear. We would have some fun. Tel the boys that I should like to sea them. Give them my respects. To all the boys tell them that I am as happy as a lark and tell them I live like a king. tel them I do about as I am a mind to. I fear not the enemy and care not a dam for no one. I am my one man and don’t care for eneything some times on gard some times …. some times working hard. Yesterday we had the long roll call and the boys jump and run the thought they was … have a fight but they got mistaken so they did not have eney. i have not got much most time to write to you i have wrote all that i can think of. it is my time for me to go on my duty. the stars and stripes flot over … high and soon it shall flot all over the world we are well and hope that you are same long you is as … as a book.
