Daughter of the renowned folk artist Mose Tolliver (Alabama, 1925 – 2006), Annie Tolliver dropped out of school at age seventeen and made a living cleaning houses, motels, restaurants, and hospitals. In her childhood, she spent time drawing and making clay objects, and created art in the style of her father’s until the 1990s, when she was encouraged by an art dealer to develop a unique style of her own. Her work has been collected and exhibited by the New Orleans Museum of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, the House of Blues, and the Strombecker Corporation, among other institutions and galleries.
