Ansel Easton Adams is considered one of the most significant American photographers and environmentalists of the 20th century. Best known for his black-and-white landscape photographs of the American West and national parks. At the age of 17, he was a member of the Sierra Club, an environmental preservation group, and remained an active member for the rest of his life, even serving as director for a time. Adam’s love for the earth and environment prompted his career with the United States Department of the Interior as a photographer of national parks. It was his continued work and environmentalism that aided the development and expansion of the National Park system.

Adams was a champion of “pure” photography, which focused on sharp focus and full tonal range. Along with Fred Archer (1889 – 1963), Adams developed the Zone System, a photographic technique that produces an ideal print based on film exposure and negative development. Adams was instrumental in the development of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art. He also co-founded the Center for Creative Photography, the research and archival department at the University of Arizona that is responsible for preserving the works of over sixty best known American photographers.

Adams was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980 for his environmental work. He received countless accolades for his work and developments in photography. Adams was posthumously admitted to the International Photography Hall of Fame in 2017. His photographs are highly coveted and held in many public and private collections across the United States.
