Hudson Mindell Kitchell was born in Madison, New Jersey in 1862. As a young artist, Kitchell worked as a contract painter and decorator for the factory, Meekers. Kitchell left the factory and started the Kitchell Embossing Company in 1890. After selling the company, Kitchell and his family moved around New York and New Jersey for a few years while he produced his commercial paintings. Kitchell was most known for landscape and marine paintings in the tonalist style which he had adapted from Ralph Blakelock with whom he worked together closely at Meekers. Kitchell passed away in Rhode Island in 1944, leaving a vast collection of works sought after by collectors of American Tonalism. His works are housed in multiple institutions including the Philbrook Art Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.
