American animator Preston Blair was born in 1908 in California. He attended Pomona College, the Otis Art Institute, and the Chouinard Art Institute. Blair’s animation career began in the early 1930s at the Romer Gray Studio until the consequences of the Great Depression forced him out. For the next few years, Blair switched between studios until moving to Walt Disney Productions in the late 1930s. Blair animated various characters and scenes in shorts and films including Fantasia, Pinocchio, and Bambi. Due to the 1941 Disney animator strike, Blair found a new job at MGM Studios where he continued a successful career to culminate with Hanna-Barbera Productions’ The Flintstones. Alongside animation, Blair also published several animation instructional books. Blair was the older brother of artist Lee Everett Blair and the brother-in-law of artist and animator Mary Blair.
