Born in Sioux City, Iowa and of Lakota Sioux descent, Frank Howell’s art depicts the intersection of the physical and spiritual worlds. Simultaneously portraiture and landscape painting, his compositions reflect the Lakota Sioux respect and admiration of the past, present and future. Howell studied at the University of Northern Iowa, served in the Marine Corps, and taught at local schools and universities. He became an avid member of the Southwest Native American Arts movement. In the late 1960s, Howell moved to Colorado, then Taos, and Santa Fe, opening art galleries in both Colorado and Santa Fe. He was a practiced painter, sculptor, lithographer, photographer and writer with work exhibited and collected across the United States.
